El Molino Rutherford Pinot Noir

$7382
750mL
2018

This sports some serious perfume, with red and black tea, savary and sassafras hints leading off, quickly followed by a racy set of damson plum, raspberry and red currant coulis flavors that extend through the lengthy, mineral-accented finish. There are Savary sparkles throughout in the background, and the energy here is coiled and vibrant. (JM)  Inner quote mark (1/2022)

Coming from vines planted in the 1990s to more than 10 different clones, the Pinot Noir is mostly whole bunch fermented, fermented on foot and on the skins for nearly a month before aging for 18 months in wood.

El Molino was founded in 1871. The winery was revived along with the historic label in 1981 by Reg Oliver, who focused on unrivalled Chardonnay and distinctive Pinot from an appellation admittedly better known for Cabernet Sauvignon. He left a legacy of stewardship and enthusiasm for Burgundy varietals that has not been lost thanks to his daughter Lily and her husband Jon Berlin. When she was nine years old, Lily moved to the winery with the family and learned a lot about the centuries-old traditions from her father. Lily uses these time-honored techniques to produce a Chardonnay of impeccable balance that can age for decades!
