Piedmont, literally 'at the foot of the mountains', comprises a large wine region in north-west Italy, southeast of the city of Turin. It is a rugged area, sheltered by the Alps with a severe climate, very hilly, diverse soil types, strongly agricultural with many small wineries. The moscato grape produces a seductively sweet, slightly sparkling white wine here, very popular for export. However, the region owes its strong image to the red nebbiolo grape, from which the famous Barolo and Barbaresco wines are made. But do not forget the increasingly better wines made from the barbera grape, while the dolcetto (unfortunately) is still drunk too much by the local population.

Giacosa Fratelli is a family business, founded in 1895 by Giuseppe Giacosa. In the 1960s, brothers Valerio and Renzo (Giacosa Fratelli means the Giacosa brothers) joined the company. Now their sons Maurizio and Paolo are at the helm. They own 50 hectares, the annual production is around 600,000 bottles. At Giacosa, the environment is paramount, no chemicals in the vineyard, water reuse, 100 solar panels, compensation of CO2 emissions, etc. The cellar equipment is extremely modern. In 2012, large French oak barrels were built in the cellar. The vinification is mainly classical, a long maceration/fermentation with maturation in used wood. Some of their vineyards are considered to be among the best in the area, for Barbaresco in particular the 'Gianmaté' and 'Mandorlo' near Castiglione Falletto, where their Barolo is made.

Bussia is the name of a vineyard in a valley of about 5 km long. In this valley, Nebbiolo grapes are planted, from which the famous Barolo is made. In the higher, cooler parts, Barbera grapes are planted.

The grapes are picked by hand and come from the sub-area Bussia in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba. The grapes are picked by hand, after fermentation the wine matures for 12 months in large oak barrels of 6,000 liters. Intense fruity aroma, spicy. Soft and elegant taste. Fresh acids, refined structure with lots of red fruit and a long aftertaste with a little bitterness.
