Winemaker Notes: Orange, amber and esoteric. Discover Pomeranz, our skin fermented Riesling. This limited project pulls its name from the old Germanic word for importer of bitter Seville oranges. Skin fermented white wines are fermented much like a red wine, extracting color and tannin from the skins. These wines are also known as Orange Wines or Amber Wines. Today skin fermented whites are rare and unique, but they have a deeply rooted history going back 5000+ years to the country of Georgia. A wine for bold palates with aromas and flavors rooted in dried apricot, orange peel, raw honey, white tea and earthy notes. A lift of acid and texture carry to the dry, rich finish.
In 2001 Shady Lane built its present winery and outfitted it with the latest in state of the art winemaking equipment. All of the equipment is designed to handle the fruit as gently as possible while allowing the winemaker the control to extract and build upon the all of the desirable elements present in the fruit. Built onto the winery is a temperature-controlled warehouse for the final aging of the wines. Since 2001 Shady Lane Cellars has expanded the total acreage to 150 and the vineyards to just over 52 acres with additional plantings of Riesling and Pinot Noir, as well as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Blue Franc (also known as Blaufrankish or Lemberger), Gewurztraminer and others.
